Yeah I'm gonna put up some net soon, I just hate to keep them in the run ...no grass and they love eating bugs and green everything.

Yesterday I heard the crows going nuts. I started looking around and saw some flying in the air, and attacking a hawk! GOOO CROWS GOOO! I hate crows when I'm trying to feed the other birds in the winter because they empty out my feeder within a few hours, but I sure enjoyed them chasing the hawk away!!

BTW, it was a HUGE hawk!! Bigger than the crows!!

Luckily it was at a family member's house, and not mine.

How hard would it be to train a year old Great Pyrenees? Someone has one near me that they are wanting to get rid of, but it's lived in the city, and not with livestock thus far. If it's naturally wanting to protect, and not that hard to train to watch my chicks, and horses, then I'll go get it.

Two thoughts on Pyreneese:

Our first dog attack since having chickens was from three great pyrenees. I got out there soon enough before they did any great damage but they were definitely after them! These pyrenees were a neighbor's dogs and not use to any other animals but dogs.

We just put a deposit on two Pyrenees pups from a breader that specifically uses them to protect his chickens. We are getting them specifically to help us with the hawks because our chickens free range as well and we have TONS of hawks in our area!

Not trying to belittle anyone, so please don't take this that way... But I'd rather have a hawk!!!

An adult Bald Eagle has just taken an interest in my property and I'm scared!!! All of my pens are covered, but still *shakes in boots* what if it decides it must have something from my property??? Like my dog?? Eep!

It is a FEDERAL offense to harm any bird of prey. The punishment can range up to a few thousand dollars in fines, and a year or so in jail.

It is *possible* to obtain a permit to legally shoot a bird of prey if it is taking your livestock -- but it's usually not a simple thing to get. One of the legal requirements for obtaining a permit is that you must first show that you have already tried NON-lethal methods of control.

Like Amazondoc said....It doesn't matter what state you live in, it's a federal offense. The permits are not easy to get, VERY slow process.

Personally, I don't blame the hawks. They are doing what they do naturally. I respect them. I also respect my chickens. I'll take whatever precautionary methods I can to make sure they are safe. If a hawk happens to get them despite all my personal efforts, then I have to respect that as much as it sucks.
