I am sorry, but why was the dog near the brooder? My indoor brooders are behind a closed door to protect the chicks .
The dog was only acting on instinct.

Well, the dog has always been around chickens, never a problem. Just liked to chase the chickens once in a while. I put him in my room with me to sleep for the night and realized I left my laptop downstairs, ran down there to get it and came right back up and it was already over with....YES it was my fault and YES it is his instinct, but NO he does not need a second chance. I will not have an animal who eats my livestock! END of story! Everyone has their own opinions and this is mine and my mind is made up. If you feel bad for him, come and get him. This dog was already on his last leg anyways.

Good post.......you should not get slammed at all.

The chicks should be kept safe from all harm. Accidents happen, but you should not blame the dog.

Yup. OP brought chicks into house where dog already was.

No wonder the shelters are full.

Yes this very sad but dogs will do the darnest things. We have a dog we saved from the pound that has killed many a chicken, but he is part of our family and it is expected some might bite the dust.
We did catch him out yelping the other day. We keep him on a chain now right by the chickens we noticed if he cant run he wont chase and he leaves the chickens alone. Well about 4 weeks ago he was not put on a chain and he killed 1 sexlink, 1 barred rock 1 polish rooster and 1 polish hen. I was so upset not at the dog but at myself for not chaining him. Anyway the other day I went out to him yelping and found the sisters to the chickens he killed running by and pecking him. Then later that day I found 5 eggs in his dog house and one hen laying on them. He was just laying next to the dog house not even a bit upset or anything. I still do worry and do keep an eye on him just because the hens are getting revenge does not mean he wouldnt try again.
I'm sorry you lost your chick if you do find your dog another home be sure to let them know what he has done. If you take him to pound do not tell them because he will just be put down. I hope your night gets better. Blessings, PQ

bring him to me, i will take him. every animal i have is a rescue or something someone was throwing away because they didn't "fit". i have a deaf dog that i got from the vet. i found the owners they said it got lost in a thunderstorm and they didn't want him anyway so they never looked for him. sad
and a rottie that was 9 months old and had been locked in a garage because it was too big and the wife didn't like it... so just tie it in the garage. just example, don't want to bore you with the cat and horse stories...
so feel free to send it here.... i will take throw aways.

i believe in the little old saying "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say it at all!" I didnt ask for anyones opinons! This is called Random Rambling....because Im rambling, ranting, venting! I dont need anyones input. And he will NOT go to the pound! He is a very well bred dog and I have had plenty of offers on him and I will call one of them tomorrow. Not that its anyones business!

I'm so sorry.

I am paranoid about dogs or cats getting my chicks. I have a brooder with a snap on lid, bolted on wire so they can't push it off. Also, they are in their own room or on the porch where the dogs can't get them. I understand you're feeling, but don't you want to wait a week to make sure you're not acting on emotion?

Aw, I'm sorry! Nasty dog. I'd never even consider keeping a dog that ate my birds around. My chihuahua snapped at one of my birds the other day, and boy howdy did she learn her lesson! I didn't get rid of her, but as soon as she turned around and saw me she knew she was in serious trouble. That was the first time I've ever had a dog show any negative feelings to my birds though. From puppyhood they learn that chickens are not to be even looked at. My lab, a BIRD DOG, knows and obeys not to bother the chickens. They live in perfect harmony now.
