I Hate Pre-algebra!!!!!

I absolutely LOVED math! Took Algebra I one year, Algebra II and Geometry in the same semester the next, then the other semester doubled up with Statistics and Trigonometry PLUS Pre-Calculus, then did Calculus..

I'm a geek.

Hate English though.

All of it stresses me out, even the simple stuff at times.

It's amazing and it has AN ANSWER!!! (unlike most things in life)

Ugh, that's exactly why I don't like it. Having multiple answers is better, because no one is right, and no one is wrong. Which is why I prefer art & English classes.

I hated addition and substraction...don't ask me what 7 + 3 is or what 8 minus 3 because I dont know right off without counting my fingers or jotting it down on paper. Frustrates me to no end.

Multiplication and division, NO problem, can do it all day without even thinking or counting my fingers.

Fractions and measurements in decimels, not a problem either. Algebra came easy for me until I got into the advance part, it got a little tough. Never got into much trig. Forget calculus, major fail!

Thank goodness I stopped going to school when I was 16 All I need to know is how to add subtracted multiply and divide.

math for us BYC'ers:

Calculate the volume needed on a feeder to hold two fifty pound sacks of feed.

How much water will your flock go through in a summer day? Winter? How much volume of water is needed not to freeze at 20F?

Figure the coop construction, especially roof and rafter angles, to optimize all that weird free lumber.

Know how to square and level the foundation, floor, walls...

Do not attempt to write a formula explaining Chicken Math. It uses imaginary numbers and other weird things.

Figure out how much each egg cost you from last year's figures. Vow never to do that again, as ignorance is bliss.

Accurately purchase everything you need at the feed store in one trip per month.

Math isn't that difficult. I like it because the rules are the rules and there are no exception. Your grade doesn't depend upon a teacher's mood, or whether or not they like you, or who the teacher's pet is in the class. There is one answer. You get it right or you get it wrong. Really clearly black and white.

Numbers always behave in exactly the same way. Always. That makes it easy to learn what they are going to do.

There is a trick though. You must learn each bit of information as it comes along. You can't learn the next step until you know this one. That means you can't leave it until the end of the semester and think you can get by the test by cramming the night before. So take a few minutes each night and learn that day's lesson.

By the way, I used trigonometry just a few weeks ago. I needed to know how wide a piece of greenhouse poly I needed to cover a new high tunnel for growing veggies. The high tunnel has a peaked ridge, not round. Round top would have used geometry to figure out, but would have been harder to build. Poly arrived in just the right size and fits perfectly.

I will use trigonometry again in the spring to learn how tall my cherry tree is, so I can build a bird proof frame around it so I can actually have a few cherries for myself.

Math skills actually get used. Not to mention, if you can do math, the jobs that require math are the ones that pay the good salaries.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0. Right there. That's everything you need to know to build a space ship that can fly to Alpha Centauri. You just need to learn the tricks that make those numbers jump through the hoops.

I hated algebra. What worked for me is deciding to ace it. It worked for my daughter as well. Most algebra boils down to ratio. To have ratio, you have to make all the items apples or oranges. Example 1 pound is 16 ounces. 1 pound 3 pounds
sixteen ounces X
. If 1 pound is 16 ounces, 3 pounds is ___ 16 x 3 divided by 1 = 48.
The major problem is converting a story to a formula. If you do 25 problems or more of this you will ace it. Above: If one lb is 16 ounces, I want to know what 3 pounds is.

Then, there's always Algebra for Dummies.
