I Hate Pre-algebra!!!!!

lol!! i'm homeschooled and a freshman, and i'm horrible in the art of Arithmetic!! i cannot seem to get a handle on it.language arts and science and the musical arts however...man i blaze right through those! but i'm no longer doing pre-algebra, i'm doing Consumers Math, which sums up all the math you'll be doing in real life such as calculating bills, buying a car maintaining a home,etc... yeah.my math basically takes bits and pieces from all levels of math that ARE useful in the "real world" and puts it into one book, shows you how to incorporate it into daily life and such.it's rather fascinating, difficult yes,but rather interesting.though i cannot escape algebra 1 and 2... *shudders*

I hated algebra, too. Loved geometry. Beat my head against word problems for years. Guess what? I'm now a 6th grade math and science teacher.

News flash. Sometimes math is boring. Sometimes math is hard. Sometimes life is boring. Sometimes life is hard. The point of these subjects is only partially to teach you the math. The rest is to teach you logic. Perseverance. Pride in learning something that was really hard for you. How to learn. How to think for yourself. You would be surprised at how many problems in life involve these skills.

Anybody out there have a crystal ball? Then I'm thinking you may not know for sure what your life may demand that you know. When I was sweating through algebra, I never dreamed I'd be teaching it one day, but here I am! Want to go into any science field, computers, engineering, teaching, cooking, owning a business? I'm afraid those math skills you're learning are only the doorway to all the math you'll need.

Sorry a stodgy old teacher joined in on your thread, but amid your irritation, try to open your mind to your life's possibilities, and see what learning to think and problem solve can do for you.

irritates kids

challenges kids
rejoices in kids' success

I use algebra every day in my "real" life. Make a real good paycheck too.
As pointed out above, algebra and trigonometry is extremely useful for farming type applications as well.

You won't get very far in science unless you learn the math. Past the first general introduction to science courses, science uses a lot of math.

Hey. Dream of growing up to be a veterinarian? Learn that math because you've got a lot of science in your future and you'll need a lot of math to be able to understand the science.

If you don't learn the pre-algebra, then you've got an entire life ahead of you with math difficulties. Learn each step as you go and it's actually not hard. You just need to make the decision that you are capable of opening up your mind to insert knowledge.
