I HATE TICKS!!!!

Took my 2 darling little goats for their first walk today out in the "back 40" more like 11...but who's counting. They were great, but we came back loaded with ticks!!! Gross!!! I HATE TICKS!! I had 3 on myself...that I've found so far...yuck, nasty little useless creatures. I smashed them and fed them to my chickens.
Just had to rant... we get so many and they are so disgusting. i mean, I don't like spiders either, but at least they serve a purpose...

I totally agree. Yuk! We put sulphur on our land to help keep those nasty boogers away but our dogs travel to the pasture across the road alot and bring them back. I can't stand it! I even try putting crushed garlic in their food to ward off the ticks and fleas.

I've been sitting out in our yard before, glanced over, and seen one crawling along the grass toward me. YUCK YUCK YUCK. I used to think they just sort of sat and waited.. which was disgusting but I could handle it. Now that I know they will actually FOLLOW... BLECHY!

Last year was horrible for ticks here. I was hoping the snow had killed a ton.. but still picking them off the dogs, cats, and one from my daughter. I've found a number of them crawling on my clothes, but so far they haven't gotten to taste me. I've started a campaign with hubby to get a guinea hen for some control. That campaign will END as soon as I find a few chicks nearby!

I can't stand them.
I have discovered a secret side to myself when it comes to ticks. Whenever I discover one on my dogs, take great satisfaction in pulling it off and killing it. I can't think of anything else I could do that to, I even go as far as 'relocating' spiders, beetles, and the like. Well, I take that back, I guess I feel the same about fleas.
There you go, the secret confessions of a tick and flea hater.

Just out of curiosity, is it guinea fowl that eat ticks or do all poultry like them as treats?

arent you suppose to tie a drier sheet to you...and the goats i heard somewhere that helped keep ticks away?

uumm try this...


* 2 tablespoons vegetable or nut oil (almond oil contains sulfur, a repellent in its own right)
* 10 to 25 drops Rose Geranium essential oil

Combine the ingredients in a glass jar; shake to blend.
Makes: 2 tablespoons
Shelf Life: 6 months

Dab a few drops on your skin or clothing, making sure to avoid eyes.

Caution
Skip the Pennyroyal if there is anyone pregnant (including pets) in the home, as it can induce miscarriage. And as always, use essential oils with caution as they can burn the skin and harm eyes. Don't use these essential oils around cats.

For what it is worth, I have been told that those fabric softener dryer sheets will keep ticks off of you if you pin them to the legs of your pants. Stuff them into your socks too. Try it, what have you got to lose.

Have you tried dusting the animals and where they roam with food grade DE (codex grade fossil shell flour)? I get mine from dirtworks.net in a 50lb bag.

The following info was e-mailed recently by a friend who is a nurse. So far, I haven't had to use it, but plan to try it when I find a tick on me or my grandson:

"I had a pediatrician tell me what she believes is the best way to remove a tick. This is great, because it works in those places where it's sometimes difficult to get to with tweezers: between toes, in the middle of a head full of hair, etc.
Apply a glob of liquid soap to a cotton ball. Cover the tick with the soap-soaked cotton ball and let it stay on the repulsive insect for a few seconds (15-20), after which the tick will come out on it's own and be stuck to the cotton ball when you lift it away. This technique has worked every time I've used it and it's much less traumatic for the patient and easier for me."
