I hate to have to say this.....

Folks, remember that the report button is your friend! The Staff cannot possibly read each & every thread, and we encourage members to click on the report button when they see anything amiss in a thread. Don't try to "handle" it youself - that's our job! Just click the report button & move on.

That being said, there is ALWAYS a way to get your point across without being contentious; think before you post, and all will be well! With 60,000 members, there's not way not to have a handful of folks that just can't help themselves in what they post at times. We just ask that when you see this happen, don't feel the trolls!

I am wondering if the thread that I started... " 11 year old predator....." is the reason for this thread. The topic ended up being closed by a moderator which was a good idea.
I love BYC, but have only posted a handful of times. I feel bad that one of the few threads that I started ended up being contentious. My intent of the thread was only to let other chicken lovers know that I was sad at the loss of my hen. I knew you all would understand.

I am thankful for the kind words that were sent to me.

To be honest and absolutely frank here, since we are putting it out there, here are my thoughts.

Most of the losses people post about begin with one thing, the owner of the chickens that are killed did not provide for their safety. Whether it was " Oh this will be good enough", or "That stuff is too expensive", or "It's the dogs fault", and they usually will lay blame on something or someone else without taking a look in the mirror at the real culprit, themselves.

I will ask a few questions to help them figure the weakpoint on their coops, say I am sorry for their loss, and move on, but the losses people have experienced here border on the assinine and ridiculous. One woman didn't feed her chicks for a few days after they arrived because they should be able to make it a few days without food, and then she wondered why they were dropping off like flies. Another person experienced a breach of security, lost a few chickens, did nothing, and then lost a whole bunch more shortly there after.

A tree falling on the coop and run, or a bear crashing through your security are pretty hard to predict or defend against. Wierd stuff happens, but come on people, life is not a Disney movie where the animals sing and dance together. There are predators out there that want to kill your chickens. Do your best to protect them. If you suffer a loss due to a coop/run failure, fix it immediately. I understand not being able to afford building a Fort Knox, but don't be surprised when you suffer a loss if you don't and there are predators in your area.

Sorry to disagree with you, and I do it respectfully, but until people own up to their responsibility of taking care of their animals, I will point them back to what the real problem is, and it is usually a choice of actions they made, or didn't make earlier.

Take care,

Andy

I think it's the name calling that I find troublesome. I often disagree and sometimes I have something to say that isn't what others want to hear, but I think differing opinions are okay. It's when people start calling people names or making personal jabs that things get heated. Unfortunately, there are a few on here that all they do is pop up and name call.
