He'd been pushing boundaries yesterday too and it was a pretty hard hit.

I've told my family to stay out of the coop and run until this resolves, even though that robs me of my assistant on the days the arthritis is bad.

He's got until the next reasonably good-weather day I have off to shape up. Or, if he draws blood he's gone as soon as I can catch him.

Okay, fair enough. Especially with the blood thing.

That's a reasonable plan. Can you separate the cockerels for a short term to see if that makes a difference? In any case, I'm sure you'll make the right call.

I *could* separate out the cockerels, but I really need to keep a second male both because there are about 21 layers to cover and because I want to progress my flock.

He's tolerated his sons at this age before.

I'm making sure they're getting out into their pen, Avian Flu or not, to make sure they have enough space available.

Ok. I was thinking short term just to see if it's agitation causing the change in behavior. Maybe he doesn't like these sons as much as previous ones?

I've had one and two year old roosters decide to take me on, and it didn't improve until the offending bird was removed, permanently. Sometime it just seems to happen, sadly.
Be careful that his third try isn't more serious...

Chickens might not like change, but they can change.
If you really want to keep him, I'd get rid of his competition pronto....see what happens.

As much as I like him, moving forward with his sons in another 6-8 months was the plan anyway.

If plan anyway, next sunny day off. It won't set your project back that much, I don't think.

Normally I am in the camp of 'off with his head'...but you are experienced. Roosters are just so darn tricky. Might be the 'sap is rising' but...

A couple of more days, should not hurt, you are aware, don't let your guard down. Roosters can just be hard.

Given my schedule and the weather forecast, I don't see anything happening until next week unless there is sufficient violence to force my hand. Perhaps he'll calm down.
