We had another small incident today.

So tonight when I closed them up, I took him off the roost, carried him around, talked to him, and set him down in a different spot on the roost.

Rameses's days are numbered. When I have 2 good sons out of him later this spring I will do what needs to be done.

He hasn't attacked, but he has challenged.

I don't want to lose my mature rooster just before the spring hatches, but he has at least one reasonable son right now.

I had been making a bit of commotion in the coop, moving some things around and such, and when I started walking around the coop afterward he came at me and flared his hackles.

I said, "Don't even think about it!" and walked toward him. He flared at me again and took a few steps forward, so showed him my boot and then turned that into walking him halfway around the run until he decided to submit and get out of my way.

I realize that me making noise and moving stuff could be upsetting, but until this month it's never resulted in this sort of behavior before.

That's fair. I think the weather is making things rise too fast. I've had a cochin challenge me (though to be fair, he's done that before, he's just waiting until I am ready to cull his batch) and Big Boy, my giant Asian black has been giving a few warnings, which he's never done before

I don't handle him much, but I might make a point of picking him off the roost every night for a bit until I'm done with him.

He's quite well-behaved in my arms. When he was a cockerel he was a terrible nest-sleeper and I had to move him every night.

Sorry this is happening, but he should be on that 'short list' before he does real harm. It won't be better later.

Maybe I've been lucky. I've had lots of roos but never had an aggressive cockerel.

My cockerel Amos, about 9 months old now, is still being overly possessive.

DH almost stepped on a pullet (Amos's favorite) and she squawked. He gave DH a peck on the back of the leg. This was the second time he did this. Last time DH had tossed out some scratch for them. Same peck on the back of the leg. No raised hackles or challenging or anything. DH scooped him up and carried him for a while.

Don't know if he will progress to anything more but I'm watching.

I hope so!!! This guy has been busy! He needs to calm down with the possessiveness. He has 20 hens out there!
