Some hens start to lay earlier than others. Are you in an area that currently has shorter days? An egg bound hen would have signs of distress.

If she was egg bound, she would likely be dead. It only take 3 or 4 days to kill a Chicken backing up like that... Likely a Late Bloomer

I have the same age group and 12 out of 18 are laying now. I have a Maran as well that was a late layer. My Polish's have not laid at all yet and neither has my Lgt Brama. Some are just not as fast to lay it seems

The Marans do lay the largest most beautiful color eggs of all my Girls... I am adding 20 into the flock this spring

I never see when she is in the box but I think her's are the rich brown med sized eggs and you are right they are really nice

How do you know she's not laying? Have you done a pelvic check?
Some birds are slow to start.

Yes, They have a great color and mine at least are very big. For reference, that hand is on a 6'5" 300 Pound Dude (me)

Possibly a late layer, or she could just be a dud. She can still live a long, healthy life even without laying.

I have raised quite a few Marans but I always give them away before they reach POL so I was actually wondering about this today cause I have at least one BCM pullet right now that I'm keeping. From what I could find they don't reach POL until 8-9 months. You can check her comb (if its getting bright red she is getting closer) and also if you approach her she might squat down and to a little "egg dance" that looks like what she does for a rooster.
