I know we aren't supposed to do anything political or religious. Does that mean we can't have pictures, verses, phrases, or just not influence or down others with different views. (pretty much is it okay to put a verse in my sig. line.

I don't think it's a question of not doing/saying anything political or religious, it's more a matter of not starting an inflammatory or divisive thread that's more than likely going to yank somebody's chain and start a highly emotional response with posts falling like dominoes. Lots of people on here have quotes, Scripture references, and other thoughts that express an idea they'd like to share. As long as the sig line doesn't contain something offensive or inflammatory, I think you'll probably be fine, right mods?

Thanks for asking the question.

Basically we disuade political or religious threads, but they are allowed in the Ramblings section of the forum with the understanding that the staff can lock or remove the thread at their discretion.

Regarding pics, verses, phrases in your signature or your avatar: Right now those are allowed in moderation. Again, if the staff thinks anything is "over the top" or a problem for the general theme of the forum they can remove it at their discretion.

We want everyone to feel welcome here. There is a LOT of grey area and we do the best we can to moderate a VERY diverse group of people.

Please remember that all the things we do are because we love the community and want to keep it friendly and safe. Our rules and the way we moderate the forum has worked very well for our wonderful community and we believe this is the reason BYC is still growing at record paces.

Good common sense will work. Sometimes a posting will take an unexpected turn and the moderators/administrators are very professional about handling the posts from there.

Basically as long as you treat others like you wish to be treated (in postings) you will be fine!

Read the posting by a so-called "moderator" on the administration posting.

Apparently at least one of them has some unflattering names for all of us.

Good point!

I've posted before about the complexity and problems with communicating by type only. So much is lost (tone, body language, etc.) which per wikipedia:

"Some researchers put the level of nonverbal communication as high as 80 percent of all communication. More reasonably it could be at around 50-65 percent. That’s exactly what Mehrabian discovered in his communication study. He found that only 7 percent of communication comes from spoken words, 38 percent is from the tone of the voice, and 55 percent comes from body language."

So, you can see that in cases where people are posting replies to a comment, especially one that has a lot of emotion, a LOT can be lost or miscommunicated, which is how about 80% of the problems start which cause a thread to be locked or removed.

We encourage everyone to be VERY careful as they reply AND read posts that solicit emotional responses.

BethinIrving, I don't understand what you're referring to. Explain?

Personally, I think these mods are just about angels. This is THE ONLY forum, or board, or community of any kind on which I have ever chosen to hang around for more than about five minutes, and that is solely because it is so well moderated.

I talk to people on here who I'd never know, otherwise. What's more, I get to listen to them, which is even better than talking. And it is broadening for all of us. In a time when everybody wants us to believe that people, and Americans in particular, are so divided, this place proves otherwise.

I can't find a bad word to say about it.
