I have a bad feeling about this!

I don't understand your problem, you ask a price he gave the price if you want to have a say in what happens to your chickens after you sell them you should not sell.

Entirely the wrong attitude if you are breeding animals. It is your responsibility to make sure they go to a good home. With roosters I take a policy of no questions asked because if I keep them I'm just chopping their heads off anyway. This is the 1 exception where I would somewhat agree with you but with any other animal I would change it to if you want to have a say in what happens to your animals after you sell them then make sure you sell them to good people. With anything but food animals I would have an entire adoption contract, home visit, questionaire, etc... The first person who comes along with money is not who gets them.

i dont know about where you live but where i live people will buy all sorts of things including animals on craigs list from towns close by and re-sell in in there town or other close by towns expecally if it is being sold "cheep" and if it more valuable in another town

ask more and you will most likely not have that problem as much. Not every one is like that. I personaly am picking up 4 hens that I got on CL today. Alot of people want bantys if that is what you are selling, so ask more if they are special or are a good breeding possiblity.

Keep in mind he just may like keeping animals or is asking for his whole family, and didn't think he was shoving them too much. Call me an optimist but he may have been an ok guy.

BTW, I paid ten each for my hens, pure bred americauna

Perhaps the guy wanted to meet in a central location for his personal safety. I don't allow people over here to buy birds anymore. I meet up at say a walmart parking lot or something like that. I would rather not take a chance letting people know where I live so they can pop over anytime and wipe me out when we are away or who knows with all the crazies that frequent CL just to look for victims ya can never be tooo safe. As for the roosters had it been me and they mishandled them (even if they are gonna eat them) RESPECT THE ANIMAL especially in front of the seller I would have said "uhh yanno I changed my mind, here is your money back and sorry for wasting your time".

There are a lot of shady people out there. Most of the people you will meet online or otherwise will be good people, but there are just as many shady people out there as well. Several years ago I found a brindle Pitt Bull puppy. She was too pretty to have been abandoned, like most people do out here. I made up some ads and put them around town about the lost dog. A guy eventually called and came to the house. I got a bad feeling about him from the start. He claimed to have lost her a while ago. He took her off my hands as I couldn't keep her anyways at the time. A week later I saw an ad in the local paper with her picture and she was for sale for $200. Boy was I furious but what could I do? It just taught me the lesson to be more careful in the future. I still can't shake the feeling that she ended up being tormented and fought or her teeth removed and made the bait dog for fight training. It's not the dog's fault. It's the human's fault that this breed is so known for it's terrible things.

Stick to venues that are safe to sell your birds where people who are really interested in keeping the birds for themselves and whom you can talk to for more than a few minutes. Farmers markets? In person auctions? 4-H clubs?

Good luck.

I am kind of puzzled here.

I could certainly understand if you were worried he'd *eat* them, if for whatever reason you wanted very strongly to have them go to "live and upright" type homes rather than a dinner table.

But apparently your big concern is simply that he might RESELL them.

Ok, suppose he does. So what?

It's not like (pardon me for saying this, I mean no offense, I'm just pointing it out) YOU were so choosy about who to sell them to, so they're no worse off with *him* selling them on than they were in the first place when you did it.

Then what's the problem?

The possibility that he might make a small profit (or heck, even a large one, theoretically) off the deal? What's wrong with that? If he's willing to invest the time and energy, and his acquired experience, into marketing them in a way that he can get a few more bucks for them, as opposed to you wanted them gone right away or maybe did not have the marketing options another person might have, I truly truly do not see anything wrong with that.

Just a thought,

Pat

What he does to them is out of your control, but to see them being treated with roughness would have upset me. They are all Gods creatures for food or friend.

I am SO mad!

I just looked on Craigslist again, and sure enough the same guy is selling bantam roosters and hens for $7! I was right, he is just turning around and getting an extra $4 each! I might just call him up and give him a piece of my mind!!!!!!!!

I wish I could have sold them to someone who would have really cared for them, but my parents really just wanted to get rid of them because they were so noisy and adding to the feed expenses. My neighbors would have taken them in a heartbeat......if they were hens. I feel so bad that I didn't get a good life for them, but maybe someone nice will buy those poor babies and take good care of them. Sigh..

Sadly, more animals are mistreated, used , and neglected than those who are cared for and given a good life.

I don't see what the problem is either. The one you should be mad at is yourself, for not selling the roosters for $7 each to the customers your buyer is now soliciting. It's the same as if you bought items at yard sales & thrift stores for low prices and then re-sold them on eBay. But there's no guarantee your buyer will be able to find other folks willing to pay $7 for a bantam rooster. He may be stuck housing & feeding them for a while before he finds someone to take them at that price. Meanwhile, you've gotten rid of birds you did not want, for the price you asked, without any bargaining-down of the price, and quickly.

The Reality of Life for chickens is that there are far more roosters hatched than can find job positions or homes as pets. If you are going to hatch eggs you will need to have a workable plan for all the unwanted roosters you make. If you are raising rare breeds or show birds it would be to your benefit to pay for advertisements in trade publications and ask a higher price. Otherwise, if you are using the free service of Craigslist, you'll have to deal with folks who are looking for bargains with your birds.

I'm still sorry for your disappointment with this transaction.
