My mottled Cochin bantam looked like that when she was a babe but she has feathered feet.

Young birds we use medicated starter grower, advanced birds receive all flock mini pell's, egg producing age receives high calcium egg maker conventional grain.. plus assorted greens upon availability of course.

yes she did get the medicated starter grower when she was 1-2mons now I'm giving her I think the brand name is "Kaytee" still a starter grower fee. When do I start giving her mini pell she's 3 1/2 years old I'm reading that his breed starts producing eggs at 5 months. Also do you take your birds to a vet to check them out?

Was wondering how many chickens do you have? You have different breeds together.. wow

but I'm one feeding her poultry feed I purchase at the pet store its a starter feed not the pellets. Is there something else I should be giving her.

Your local Pet store sells chick feed??
Do you have a tractor supply co or rural king, local to you?
Generally speaking, pellets are hard to eat for younger birds. A crumble would be ideal for that age.
I mentioned "all flock, because it is a micro pellet".


We start with this product.




Transition into this. It has lower calcium. Our teenagers don't need an overload of calcium until egg production begins.



Our adults are feed this. It comes in pellets and crumble. We buy both and mix them together 50/50.

This is what we do. Others may come along and recommend something different.
If your bird's living indoors, pull up some grass from outside and let her nibble on it as well.

If you are comfortable with the fact she stays indoors with you at night, may I suggest a small chicken tractor should be used out doors during day hours.

Nothing fancy is required. Simplicity is less expensive.

I would find a companion. Chickens are social animals. Your local cragslist or community bulletin board at your local feed store perhaps. She is a large breed, so seek out another of the same. Bantam's would not be a good match, size wise. RI Red, Barred rock, Leghorn, Wyandot etc.

Probably most people do not take their chickens to the vet. Certainly not until they are sick or injured. I have taken my rooster (he was beaten pretty badly by a rooster I brought in and quarantined)....but he was my favorite rooster and I've taken in a hen. Most problems can be resolved at home but even then not everyone can be saved. I'm not sure how your hen will handle indoors/outdoors during winter with her body trying to adjust. But definitely you need at least one more chicken. You could get a chick and keep them separate until they get used to each other....she will probably eventually be so happy to have a friend she can talk to that she will take to it pretty quickly.

I have always heard that chickens, like all birds, are flock animals. I've heard that it's advisable to have 3 in a flock minimum, simply because if something should happen to one there will be 2 left, instead of just a solo bird. Given that you got the hen from a treacherous who hatched her, perhaps she'd be agreeable to giving you a couple more? Or perhaps contact your local farm rescue sanctuary place & see if they have any adoptable hens. Sometimes they are of differing ages, so anything is possible. (We just adopted 7 girls from a rescue/sanctuary group & they're fantastic. Up to you about which way you go tho.
