Well my Muscovy girls have been laying lots of eggs but noone wants to brood yet till yesterday, iwent into the duck house and my little cochin bantam was sitting on the eggs so i thought she is probably laying her egg in the pile they do that sometimes, well 2 hrs later she was still there so I lifted her up no chicken egg but she was planted on the duck eggs, last night I had to take her out of there to put up the ducks and she pitched a fit, this morning she was back on the eggs as soon as the door was open. So I went and took all but 4 eggs out from under her, she is bantam after all and thats alot of egg under her, so now I have a question since i have never let a chicken sit on duck eggs or vise versa, can she sit for 35 days? that is a long time for a chicken to sit on eggs. She is a great broody and mama I haven't got any worries there but I don't want her to sit and give up when it takes so long. Has anyone any experience with this? if so please let me know what you think. Thanks..

She'll be fine. I've used silkies in the past. In fact, if you take the babies as they hatch, and when only the nonhatchers are left, give her a new batch, she may even sit for up to 3 hatches. She'll be fine, and make a good mama.

Please note, the babies will be too big to sit under her in only a few short weeks. I have a pic of a white silk on 2 peking babies, and she was up on TOP of them, way above the ground. LOL

I sneak in a spray them with water once every other day the last 2 weeks. Just pick her up, shoot fast, set her down.

Congrats on your broody Miss Lydia. I was hoping that my silkie would sit on some of the first muscovy eggs that were laid but I don't think she liked where I put them. Now if there is nothing in the nestbox she will sit there for weeks on her invisible eggs.

Thanks jw, I was hoping for one of my ducks but they are having to much fun playing right now, so a chicken it is.

Oh and i know about growing fast, my muscovy hatch a gosling almost 5 years ago, she did fine with 1 Don't think she would have been able to have handled 4 under her either. I will take lots of pics during this.

How exciting! Do let us know how it all goes (with pix!). This will be a great experience to share.

ive heard of 2 broody hens sitting on nothing for 100 days, we have only had 1 broody hen who sat on nothing for weeks, but i tried and break her, then I tried and get my mom to buy her eggs to hatch, we almost got ducklings to just stick under her, but never did

she'll work great, and the best part will be when her 'chicks' go swimming

I know she'll probably have heart failure when she sees them go into their water bowl.
