I have a Broody RIR!!!!! Update pics pg3 & pg5

That's cool, I've read that RIR's rarely brood, but that the ones that do, make excellent moms.

When I want eggs for hatching, from a particular hen, I take her off the roost at night, and put her in my nursery pen, (that one you saw with the dog house in it) or other secluded area. After she lays her egg, I let her out with the others, repeat the next night, and so on, until I have several eggs.

How are the green eggs coming along? I have a few in my bator right now, along with turkey and guinea eggs, and a few Dorkings. (not mine, shipped ones)

That's not a bad set-up you improvised for her, I could use a few of those, myself, sometimes. Pretty hen!

Thanks, she is one of my largest and best looking ones. I really love the watermellon crates. They are great for brooding chicks or seperating a bird and best of all they are free! I thought I might stick her back in the watermellon crate at night after she starts laying agian and let her out after she lays her egg. I will PM you after I candle the eggs. I am on day 7 with those and will do it within the next few days.

You are lucky. I'm hoping for a potential broody out of 8 RIR pullets I have now. How old is your broody? Mine are 15 weeks today. I'm hoping for the first eggs here in the next month or so. Do you think it's too much to hope for a broody this year? Also, how long do plan on keeping her and the chicks isolated in their watermelon crate?

She is just a year old. This is my first broody so I don't know if they are normaly a year or older before going broody or not.
I only plan to keep them isolated in the crate for a few days and then I will open the "door" I made in it and they can come and go as they want.

Just put Bantam White Cornish and B. C. Maran eggs under my first broody (a Production Red). In spite of the rumors, she is intent on this idea of setting! To amaze us even more, a White Leghorn thinks she wants to try it too! Expecting some shipped eggs Wed. or Thurs. (Partridge Penedesencas and some more B. C. Marans), if she still is in the mood, I think, I'll give her a chance!

Yay!

Don't worry about her eating habbits. They usually only get a nibble on the food early in the morning and in the evening. Broody hens don't need much energy to brood eggs. They sit all day and the eggs keep her warm the same way she keeps them warm. So eating isn't too necessary. Just make sure she can get to the food and water

I removed my golden comet from her cage today, she had been in the cage since thursday making sure she had plenty of food and fresh water at all times, her broody spell is gone after four days, she is back with the flock and calm and gentle as ever,I did notice however that she was a bit aggressive towards the other hens at times, could this be that she had to restore her position in the flock?I read about the cage method on here and tried it,,it seemed to work for me,,,but I did feel a bit bad about seeing her in lockup and not being able to join the rest of the flock,,but,,wasn,t my fault she was there,,nature has her way,we only work around it,,,

Well she stuck with it and the eggs are due in the next day or two! It is so hard to wait. I almost wish she were a little mean and would peck me if I try to check the eggs

She just flatens out and yells at me, but never even tries to peck! I am just going to pretend she is an incubator and I must keep it closed!

I hope to have pics in a few days of mom and babies!
