I have a duck problem

Let me clarify: WE call the girls hens and the boys drakes to cut down on the confusion. If I told DH to go get a duck the first thing he would say is " a hen or a drake". So there, you can all rest assured I know the technical name for a female duck IS duck.

I have to do the same with my dad, if I just say 'duck' he says 'the drake or the hen?' I usually change it to 'hen duck' cause if I just say 'hen', he'll think I'm talking about a chicken!

Well I didn't really think that you didn't but are you sure what is the proper name for a Young duck or drake? cockerels. The people that run poultry shows are mostly chicken people and they tend to use the chicken terms for ducks too.

I'm thinking that the actual term for a young duck is young duck? Seems like I read that on here somewhere. I wonder at what age they are considered just a duck? Or an old duck? Too many terms! I think we should just call all of them the same thing!

That's right, the male is a drake. I'm not sure what young ones are called (technically), and that's what the OP was having difficulties with, I believe. I just call them young ducks and old ducks, or young drakes and old drakes

yes, female duck is a duck, male is a drake, a baby is duckling. Seems too simple, but that it is!

Duck : Any of various wild or domesticated swimming birds of the family Anatidae, characteristically having a broad, flat bill, short legs, and webbed feet.

Drake : A male duck.

Hen : A female bird, especially the adult female of the domestic fowl.

Drake is correct for a male but a female is called a hen.

I'm sorry to correct you, but a duck: 1. Any of various wild or domesticated swimming birds of the family Anatidae, characteristically having a broad, flat bill, short legs, and webbed feet.
2. A female duck
The male is called a drake and baby duckling

just as goose: 1. a fairly large web-footed long-necked migratory bird
2. the female of such a bird ,
male is called gander and baby is called gosling

The female of the waterfowl is not called a hen.

I have a simular problem I have five mallards 2 are hens and I have 1 drake pekin(used to have 2 pekin drakes and a hen... lost the hen and then her mate died a wek later) the drakes are trying to mate each other. hubby bought me to baby ducks thinking they were pekins(definately not- bless his heart he doesn't know much about duck breeds) I have been looking for some hens locally because i don't want to get rid of my drakes
