I have a spot that needs to be cleared off, has a mixture of regular maple trees, odd and ends and locust trees with thorns. Am I asking for trouble getting this fenced for goats to clean up? I don't want to put them in danger with those locust trees and their horrible thorns.

They're just liable to gnaw the thorns off too. They will be fine. i have the same thing here that we just got fenced in and they LOVE it...hard to get them to come from out there to go to bed..lol!

I don't know if this will help but my Brother and Sister-in-law put goats on their property in Oregon to clear their property.
I live in Central California so I can't relate.
I do know that when I visited I can sure say that the goats were VERY EFFECTIVE at clearing the brambles and various berries, (very thorny), up as high as they could reach standing on their hind legs.
When I say cleared I mean they really cleared those brambles. All they left were the really big trunks of the berries.

No fears! We use our goats as weed eradicators. They love raspberries and poison ivy. Ours are fenced in with black locust trees and they have no problems. Goats are at their happiest penned in a scrub-brushy area. They aren't as keen at eating grass like a cow would be.

Just don't put collars or harnesses on them. It would be interesting to see a before and after shot of the area you want cleared.
