Hence nikischick's advice to pee on the pile...drink the beer first, then moisten the pile.

A properly constructed pile shouldn't have much in the way of bad smells or maggots. I'll be interested to see how my chicken waste + pine shavings composts - slow, I bet. Used to have about a dozen ducks and geese in an old coop and used straw for bedding. Composting that in an old garbage can was amazing - it heated up very, very quickly and I had finished compost in about three weeks, turning it every two or three days.
