I have a question about genetics

I used to raise crele old english game bantams. I started with a bb red and barred oe. The f1's did have barring but it wasn't very good until the 2nd and 3rd generation. I suppose, coming from that background, when I think of barring, I think of black bars on another color base. I've never studied the barred rock genetics. Are the black and white both bars or is it considered white bars on a black base ?

Barring is only white bars. The way the barring gene works is it 'turns off' color pigment in barred sections of the feather, resulting in white areas of no pigment. It also shows up better the slower the birds feather in, so the trick to really nice, crisp barring is a slow feathering bird. That's why a lot of the really good barred rock lines are slow to feather. Makes their barring crisp and precise.

Crele is the same thing - it's the same gene, and it's white bars on the other colors.

When you say crele, you're meaning the crele color, which is like this, right?

That is white bars on the black and gold feathers.

X2 barring just makes white bars.
