I have a question about what causes a thread to get locked?

By the way one of the rules is not to question the mod's about locked threads...

The first rule of "Fight Club" is you never talk about "Fight Club"...

The second rule of "Fight Club" is you never talk about "Fight Club"....

I think RedHen wonders why some offensive ones get locked and others don't.

I don't think her intention was to second-guess a Moderator's recent decision, or to protest the locking of a thread.

A review of the Rules of the Forum would do all of us some good. Then there'd be no question about what's allowed and what's not.

Well if you read the rules you would know there are clear rules and in the thread you are talking about the mods posted exactly what rules where broken, but common sense could be used......

i have plenty of common sense...

...so, lets look at this from another perspective....i have a 17 yr old foster son...he has some learning disabilities..he is actually in a special program at the high school..for kids just like him (if you get my meaning)...so anyways, i sometimes sit with him and let him browse BYC with me...he is a big chicken lover...his favorite is an Aracauna he named "Sunshine"..well recently we were browsing here and we opened a thread with some people kinda making fun of spelling/grammar, writing styles..etc......Now, i have been trying to get him to sign up here.. to get his own username and such., so he can learn more about the chickens he likes so much.....but, after seeing that thread, he said he wont sign up here because hes afraid people will make fun of his spelling/writing abilities....and, so, yes..it gets me upset sometimes....sorry.....

Tell him that he shouldn't let the few ruin it for him..... I have an uncle that can't spell for anything.... and I'm always telling him how he's missing out by letting that stop him from communicating with people. And now a days.... there's always spell check if you're worried about it

I've seen the picking like you're talking about... I really think it's only a few out of the many thousands of wonderful folk here. Besides...... maybe they could use a reality check

redhen tell him to read my posts. I am the typo queen! While my reasons are different and due to a laptop with those absurd small keys, the fact remains that some of my post make it appear that I am a 2nd grader. When in fact I am far from it. Tell him he is more than welome to join here and post...he will not be picked on whatsoever.

Also remind him that most often those who pick on others, do so in a veiled attempt to conceal their own weakness or weaknesses. Not everyone here using spell check in a word document before they hit the submit button.

Note: I missed several capital letters at the beginning sentences...and I am not changing it.

awe thats horrible that your son feels that way - and subsequently you (((hugs to you both)))

you know - my son is only 10 and not a very good speller - but I absolutely love love love how he writes at times - he spells things out "phonetically" sometimes (after all, isnt that how we learn

) even in school and the teachers dont mark him down for it because he's learning and they get what he's saying.

Momma hen protecting her baby - I'm with ya!

and thats sad that people restort to doing that on here... I'm all for debating in an adult sense and we can agree to disagree on things, but if someone takes a low blow approach - that's just uncalled for.

ETA: SEE (points up to word thats supposed to read "resort" - I'm going leave that just for a point!

) Half of my edits are for spelling btw.. my fingers get the best of me

A moderator decides. When it's iffy, then we discuss it behind the scenes.

We often move threads to behind the scenes so we can discuss them. This is why sometimes they "disappear" then magically "reappear". But, often they stay behind the scenes because no one can decide what to do with the mess.

The ones simply locked are just blatantly against the rules so there is no discussion.
