I have a question about what causes a thread to get locked?

Just so i am clear about things here..what exactly causes one thread to get locked opposed to some others that are basically just as insulting to others that get to stay open...for example:...if a thread about "fatties on an airplane" gets locked..(and i see why it was)...would you say another one insulting peoples speech and lack of writing skills is proper?...

...this is something that i cant seem to figure out here...where is the line drawn?...i am asking because i dont want to cross this line and not understand why..or how i am crossing it...shouldnt there be clearer rules..so as to avoid this problem in the future?....i mean how would a person KNOW their airline post would get locked..when others are allowed?....again, i am just asking this question in a general sense here...because i dont want to get the boot from nifty and not know why....

....if picking on some peoples disabilities is okay here..then picking on overweight people should also be allowed right?(and no..i dont think that should be allowed either..)...maybe my thinking is skewered here....and i'm often hard headed...

in re: to the "airline" post - that post was offensive in how it was worded by the OP. Say someone wanted to ask how others felt about it (now this is JMO) like "hey - look at what this news aritcle says - how stupid/unethical is this?" *because it was absolutely a violation of human rights IMO (edit: meaning I dont think you should make anyone pay more for their size - although I know the article stated something else...), but thats just my opinion* then - I dont think it would have been locked or viewed as a personal attack; however the OP took it to an entirelyl different level and called people names = personal attack.

If someone is making fun of someone else due to a disability and that disability is known - then that isnt right either...

I think you have to look at your postings as "outside the box" - and ask yourself if it werent YOU personally asking/saying it - would you be offended by it? If you can say yes - then its offensive.

but thats just my thoughts on it... the Mods/Admin are the bosses after all

Think of it like this:

1. A forum such as this is a theocracy managed by several who are appointed by the admins.
Being a theocracy rather than a democracy, things are done without the vote of the populace.

2. Those who are appointed to moderate have personal preferences. They are given that discretion by the admins who chose them.

3. Those preferences will lead to not being able to " please all the people all the time".

What is fair for one, is injustice to another. Its a hard thing being a moderator, and even harder being an admin. For the most part it is a thankless job, that can cause you to have to step past friendships at times to do things that are not comfortable for you to do.

Trust me, I know.

Ohh..a thought just occured to me..i hope the mods dont think this is intended for them in any way!!..its not at all!..honest....i am honestly concerned about this..where is the line drawn?...thats what i am trying to figure out ...

You would not just get booted off. They will warn you, publicly or with pms. If you don't stop, then you can get banned. The admin and moderators here understand that we are all just people. Sometimes things happen that not everyone would agree with, you just deal and move on. There were some things I didn't like about the site, so I stopped logging on for a while. Then I decided the good times outweigh the things I don't agree with. Nobody makes you log on, you just have to decide if you can take the good with the bad.

Well if you read the rules you would know there are clear rules and in the thread you are talking about the mods posted exactly what rules where broken, but common sense could be used......
