I am new to the board, so hello! I have about 18 chickens of various breeds and they have a coop in my barn but have free range to come and go as they wish. I recently bought a few chickens from an auction and now a few of my birds have eye issues. The best way to describe it is, it starts out pussie and then goes to where it almost looks like there is a layer of skin growing over and covering the eye. I have one bird that has both eyes this way and another with one eye like this. What is it and what can I do for them? Thank you for any help.

Welcome fellow Texan!

I had a young pullet with the same problem and I was able to give her powdered azithromycin mixed with oatmeal until her infection cleared (about 4 days) and I didn't have an area to seperate her to at the time, but I would have if one would have been available. Fortunately for us, none of the others caught her particular infection.

I don't know much about those types of things, nor do I try to speculate, however I will guide to you some very helpful posts:
Scroll to the top of the page and choose the 'Search' feature from the links menu. When you get to the search page, type 'eye infection' and then choose the 'emergencies/diseases/injuries' category. There are literally hundreds of posts on different types of eye problems and wonderful suggestions for treating each different type.

Good luck and let us know how it goes

...are there respiratory symptoms???
...can you post a pic?
When they are sick you should give a good poutlry vitamin/supplement...AviaCharge2000 is a good one and the only complete supplement i know of (you can order from McMurry or Strombergs)

Update

I don't think there was a respitory problem, but I don't really know what signs to look for. When I think respitory I think they would be coughing or sneezing and they did none of that.
BUT...
I did start the hens on Tylan 50 for three days and added Teramycin to all of the waterers and it has cleared up in the two hens. That is a big relief. Thanks for all of the help!
