Hello, I'm new here. I just wanted to see if anyone had any feedback on my situation. I'm looking to get a couple (few) Guinea Fowl and was wondering if anyone had any advise for me. Here's my situation:

I bought an Island on a river in Wisconsin and it's zoned conservancy which doesn't allow me to put any "permanent" structures on it so it's primarily used for camping and relaxing. It's 15 Acres and has a abundance of ticks on it and I learned that Guinea hens eat ticks and thought it would be cool to try something like that out. the only thing is I can't necessarily (obviously) go there every day although close to every weekend if I wanted. But it's mostly wooded and I would have them roam free scavenging for themselves. I'm not sure exactly what I would do in the winter time though because there's a possibity of not getting there for a couple of months in the winter. I was thinking of leaving them some feed and build them a coop for that time but does that make sense. Any feedback or comments would be appreciated.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

I have never kept Guinea Fowl so I can't tell you much. You might stop by our Guinea section and ask around there as to how this might work out...https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/45/guinea-fowl

Good luck and we do welcome you to our flock!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I'm afraid I too don't know much about guineas but please do check out the link that TwoCrows has left for you. Lots of guinea keepers there who will be able to help you.
We do have a couple down at the farm where I keep the horse and I must say they do have a very interesting alarm call!!

Good luck with your new venture and enjoy BYC :frow

I also know nothing about guineas except they' alarm' at everything and eat lots of ticks. I imagine they would turn wild when you aren't around enough and probably be able to live off the bugs and such, and being on a island, would have water it is isn't salty. But predators might finish them off well before then.
