My husband asked me last night why we only put straw/shavings in the roost and not in the run.

And I'm not sure I know the answer....

I guess you could put straw in the run, but why would you? It's dirt. Some folks put straw in the run to keep the mud down. I prefer sand. And a covered run.

You put straw or shavings in the coop, under the roost, so that the moisture in the poo is absorbed, therefore keeping it cleaner/drier inside the coop. Chickens poo about 40-50% at night while they sleep (on their roost).

That is kind of what I told him, and he said,"What, you don't think the chickens will poop in the run?". That's when I satrted getting confused. But it is basically that they scratch/disseminate the droppings in the run, right?
