I have no idea what I am doing

What a friend taught me is to dip the umbilical in cornstarch so it drys up quickly and no bacteria gets in and it will heal very quickly....I had to do that the last hatch with one that blasted out of the shell and was bleeding....Keeping it moist does not allow it to heal fast....

.....

Thank you for that, I am hoping that I do not have an issue with this but just want to be prepared for the worst case. I did see the duck yawn around 3:30am during the hatch and we have some concern that it might still be in the process of absorbing the sac. The chick is still in the egg but getting agitated and looks like it wants out so I need to be prepared. Hopefully this is all over kill. Thank you again

It is always better to be safe than sorry, I say. I have debated on getting actual surgical equipment just for instances like this with eggs and setting up a room full of supplies... Though I am a crazy bird lday. XD

Good Morning!! Sounds like you had a crazy night :hugs

if it is yawning, it is still absorbing, when it starts to get really restless you will know it wants out, if it comes out and there is some yolk still out just put some neosporin on it so it doesnt dry out and just make sure it doesnt get caught on anything and rupture

Good luck :fl
I am not even sure if it is still yawning. Last I noticed it was around 3 or 4 am, I am trying to leave it quiet. When I am looking at it it gets all crazy and squirming and im affraid he will come out too soon. Funny how all I wanted was for it to hatch and now all I want is for it to stay in.

Cornstarch does help as it makes the cord dry out, but I didn't have any at the time, but I did have tissue at the ready to wrap around any blood. I was both confused and relieved when I wrapped the tissue around the cord after making the cut and... Only getting two teeni pin-prick sized blobs of blood show up before it stopped completely.

If you're not a drinker....this might be a good time to start. You're gonna need a stiff drink and a vacation when this is over.

The second egg I assisted, though you can't see it, it did still have some red cord still attached. After I snipped it off, the chick imminently went to trying to stand and my god, it was peeping up a storm during the whole hatching process, even before it left the egg, it was staring up at me, way livelier than my first assisted hatch in which I was a bit late on, but thankfully not too late. It didn't take long before it turned into a cottonball after drying off with lots of cuddles.

I didn't take any pics of my first assisted hatch as I didn't think it would have made it, and photoshooting was not in my mind at that time. :p
