hip to knee pain could be a tight IT (iliotibial) band, a typical injury for female cyclists due to the hip width verses the pedal width. if it's more a butt pain, it could be your piriformis (sp?) muscle that runs deep under the gluteus (butt) muscle, that the sciatic nerve runs over, under or through it. the sciatic nerve would then cause the knee pain. just a couple of ideas.
the piriformis muscle is very hard to massage yourself. i've had it knot up on me once and the only remedy was to get a small sturdy metal rake dig it into the yard, jam the end of the handle into my butt muscle and lean my whole weight against it to massage it. the IT band can be massaged loose, and then specific stretches can help prevent either from returning
