So I went out to do chores and I saw something weird in the nesting box so I removed the chicken and as I was removing her she squirted some sort of clear liquid all over my leg. She also did this yesterday but I thought it might have been a fluke with an egg, but today as I was separating her it continued to keep streaming out . I have no clue what is is if you can help me please do. Also she is a Rhode Island Red . Thanks in advance.

You need to observe this hen. She may be egg bound.

When you put her on the ground, what does she do? Is she holding her tail down? Can you look at her vent and see if she could be straining? Is there clear liquid dribbling out of her vent as it pulsates? Any sign of vent prolapse beginning to occur?

Has this hen had any shell-less or thin shell eggs? Do you know when she last laid an egg?

Yes okay i figured it out, she was egg bound so i helped her along and I could tell she was worn out from pushing(she was falling asleep in my arms which she never does) , I have her separated still just so she has time to catch up on everything and then tomorrow I will put her with the flock again. Thanks for the help!

Are you going to enlighten all 67 of us who are interested in your thread and tell us how you helped your hen with her egg binding?
Okay I’m sorry I was so worked up because chickens are my life but I will try and explain it to the best I can. So the white of the egg was oozing out on its own, so I started massaging it out of her onto an old towel we had laying around. I did it for a little bit and then I would give her a little break. Then an odd like u shaped thing start pouring out and then got stuck, so I was very very slowly pulling on it to help her. Once that membrane chunk came out, the egg yolk and soft egg shell squirted out after. During the whole “procedure” I was wearing animal safe gloves for her safety. If you have more questions feel free to message me on here!
Hope this worked for you!

Good job! We always want to hear how someone successfully treats a chicken. However, I do have a suggestion. Actually two.

When an egg collapses inside a hen, yolk can help bacteria to grow in the reproductive tract, and that can set up a chronic infection, even though a hen may act okay. It can cause the hen not to lay in the future.

By giving a calcium supplement before and after an egg bound episode, you can help the hen's contractions to continue to expel all the egg material, even if you think it all came out. The other is to give a round of an antibiotic such as amoxicillin to kill off any bacterial that started to grow, thus preventing a chronic infection.
