I have started building a "MONSTER" of a coop and run!2

Greg.....looking great! Might I make a few suggestions tho!? In the runs.....you might want to get a 2x4...or 4x4 post, and place a 1ft square on top of it to prop up the run fencing roof. When you get ice...like we do here in SE Indiana, that run fence roofing will be a gonner! The feed buckets...need a top on them as well...maybe a large cone shape, to keep them from getting on top, and pooping in the feeders, also, you might want to raise them a little more. They should be about the height of the hens back. Same for the water dishes as well. Raise them to back height. For the nest boxes....they should be enclosed...and maybe a little higher. Hens like to get into a dark place to lay...and feel safe off the ground if possible from predators. Now, speaking of predators....are you planning to burry that fencing outside? And those latches...a coon will open them no problem. Not trying to sound snobby...just a few suggestions. Oh, and one more thing....when ya coming to SE Indiana...to build MINE!?? LOL

I am totally wowed at the project. its a wonderful place for any chicken to live. I am so impressed and hope you dont take offense at the little hints the more xperienced chicken people have.. they are correct.. and may i add my own little bit of wisdom..id put the roost up higher from the floor. they love it up high.. feel more secure. If it was my roost to build id probaby put two x fours all the way across the width of the house. from front to back..whatever. they would love it and they dont need a ladder altho it would be f un to build one and it would look good.

im planning on building a better chicken house if this cold winter ever ends.. by the end of february it starts looking better around here.. it was 56 degrees today bt the wind was so bad it was o fun to be outside.. i do love a project lumber trucks go by my house often and i day dream about hijacking one.. one of these days...what fun it would be to have all the lumber you wanted to build all you wanted to?????????judy

Great work Greg.

We are getting ready to build a coop also. I love this coop. May steal a few of your ideas.

Beautiful job.

I especially liked the way you made each individual area walk through. I'm remodeling an old coop and I built the pens on one side and made a walk way. Seems like you used your room more effeciently.

Nice craftsmanship.

For starters, yes I do plan to raise everything........ everything was at back height b4 putting 6 inches of straw down...... so I will be raising e-thing.

As for nesting boxes those are just temporary, I am going to build nesting condos, once I get all the chicken I plan to have per coop area.....then build the condo with 5 hen per nest ratio.

AS for the run.......yes to burring the fencing along the grown.......the latches, a coon might be able to unlatch, but with the doors swelling a little I don't see them being able to open the doors...lol

But like every project there is always a little something to tweek, adjust, redo, ect. I will for ever be doing something to the coop, making lil improvements.
