I have to cull :(

Well, this will probably sound harsh, but I'll say it anyway. If it's really its intestines outside its body, then you need to put on some big boy pants and cull it now... It sucks, but a huge part of having animals is death, whether natural causes or ending suffering. I recently had to put a horse down that I've had for ever and a day, you don't think that sucked? Bawl and do it anyway, and end it's suffering. I know it's hard but it's better for the animal. Sorry you have to go through that, but let me tell you, it's a big part of it.

Just think of it as mercy killing. How would you like your intestines out and crooked toes? I bet you'd want the pain to end right? Do the thing a favor, kill it a easy as possible.

I don't mean to be blunt... but waiting for your dad to cull it tomorrow morning is just plain cruel.

There is no way you should be hatching chicks if you cannot deal with culling the ones who are SUFFERING.

This is going to sound awful, but it is an easier way to cull, if you don't want to see anything.....

Put the chick in a brown paper bag, and gently close the bag. Go outside, and place the bag on the sidewalk. Drop a very heavy brick or large rock on the bag. It will die instantly, and never know what happened. It will be over immediately, and then you can bury the whole bag if you want. You won't have to look at the little chick.

This way, in my opinion, is the easiest way. It all happens so fast, that I want to think the baby doesn't really feel anything. It is dead in a split second, and bonus--you don't have to look at it. This is never easy, no matter how many times you have to cull. Each chick is a little precious life, and when one is suffering, it deserves to die as quickly and humanely as possible.

I'm so sorry you and the chick have to go through this!

My thought is along the same lines of everyone else, first be absolutlely sure you really need to cull, and then do it as quickly as possible. If you need your dad to do it (I'm the same, I'd ask DH), please do it now, if the poor thing is suffering, end the pain now! I'm not sure of the most painless way, but just do it soon!

I agree with A1 if your going to have chickens you have to be able to cull.
I did my first cull on a day old chick yesterday. I didn't want to do it, but it had to be done.
I felt so much better knowing it wasn't suffering any more.

A1 Sorry about your horse, I've done that one also and its really hard.
