I have to skin a CAT!

They tried to make me dissect a cat in biology class in 10th grade. I told the teacher I would not do it, and he threatened to fail me. I took the F and walked out of the class, and still to this day do not regret it. They tried to put a cat down in front of me that looked like one of my beloved kitties I had at home. There was just no way.

I am an LPN as well as having a degree in medical assisting. I can see no reason on this earth how skinning a cat will help you in any way once you start actually working. Unless it's that if skinning a cat doesn't gross you out, nothing will.

ARE YOU SERIOUS????!!!!!

Well tell your teacher that if she's all excited about being cruel, why doesn't she go be cruel to herself! See how she likes it!

In my opinion, you shouldn't stand for this. It's sick and wrong and cruel! It's just as bad as her bringing in a bunch of humans and saying, "Yay! Lets skin these people and dissect them!" What's the difference?

What you can do is do not do the class(that's what I would do). I'm so glad that you don't want to do it.

You could even talk to your teacher about it and maybe she would change the whole thing into something that isn't cruel to animals.

If I were you, I would go to the principal. There's no need to hurt animals for the sake of education, when there are plenty of better options.

MichiganWoods, I'm so proud of you! Great job on taking that F and not tolerating such cruelness.

And good job to everyone who didn't/wouldn't tolerate it either.

Good luck! And again, I'm so glad that you don't agree withw hat your horrible teacher is doing.

I did that in high school and while the EEEEWWWW factor is high at first you'll really learn a lot. We were assured that the cats were already dead or cats that had been euthanized at shelters (as cats are euthanized EVERY day at shelters) and their bodies were being used to learn anatomy just like human bodies are used in med school.

It's not "cruel" - the cats are dead already. If you are going into the medical profession you must learn the skills of "operating" as well as being able to face the horrific and graphic guts and gore that go with the profession. If you can't face disseting a dead cat how will you face a mangled but alive human being? If you skip this class will you skip the next and the next? You might want to ask yourself if you really want to be a nurse.

What would all of you say if the OP was going to be a vet?

Mammalian anatomy has a lot in common amongst the different species. Would you rather the students work on a human cadaver?

I did not mean to make this into a Cruel or right debate, I should have thought about that. I have no problem disecting most things I think the cat thing is just shock value. I certainly would not do if I did not have to and I dont mind watching it, Im just not sure I could personaly do it. Does that make sence? Everything else we have to disect is just parts so Im not seeing the animal so wount be as bad. Im sure it will be interesting, Im just still tring to get over the shock

I did this. I did this in highschool biology when i was in 12th grade. It took us quite some time to finish. We traced the circulatory system, the muscles, etc..the other organs by group- my cat was pregnant.

They got ours from the pound- not the local one. After they were euthanized.

In college, I did a fetal pig, In tech school I did a rabbit that was alive but I anesthetized it, and we did a cat after we anesthetized it also- that one came from the shelter.

I DID A CHICKEN too. I dont remember where we got those from.
