I have to talk POLISH!

Prariechickens, i read several pages back your great prose about each of your polish and how they got their names. Then i saw the tshirt you made and saw that the white chicken was named Winnie. Well, my name is Winnie and I would love to hear her story........
Winnie was part of a trio of white chicks that we got from a rainbow layer assortment, and since they all looked alike, I thought they should have names based on a trio from television or movies. I'm a big fan of Hocus Pocus, so I decided to name them after the three witch sisters Winnie, Sara, and Mary. "Mary" turned out to be a boy, so he's called Mars now, but the other two remain unchanged.

Winnie is my favorite of the trio, and she's an absolute sweet heart. She was in the house yesterday for an injured leg, but she's doing much better now.

Lucy is gorgeous!

Here's a few more "Awkward Teen Years" pictures.

Tina who is sadly no longer with us

Elvis, back when we still though he was a girl and his name was Buttercup

Aretha Chicken

I have tons of photos of them looking ratty and scraggly and terrible but they're all on my external HD which I don't have with me lol
So cute! My husband is really crowing it up over Lucy.....He picked her out and everyone is raving about her wild looks. (Nobody around here has much experience with chickens much less a crazy looking Polish.

Hello! I'm a silkie thread person but I just got a silver laced cockerel at a swap today! The woman said he is 5 months old, but he hasn't started crowing yet. Is this normal? Also she said they are quieter than other roosters, I had gotten a barred rock roo last weekend and he was OBNOXIOUS! Anyway, how does he look? I know nothing about polish, only silkies, so if you could give me some critique that would be great! He crest was disgusting and I think he had lice so he got a flea bath and a good scrubbing! His crest is still dingy but it looks 100% better than before.

My polish cockerel is over 5 months and hasn't crowed yet.
good

maybe he can keep it that way! lol

I'm rehoming him anyways unfortunately. My 4-H leader is taking him along with my two EE bantams, she has a home for two if them, and might keep the third. He is a bit unfriendly and although I am allowed to have a roo, I'd rather not right now. It's a shame because he is a handsome Red.

how can i keep my standard chickens from plucking the tail feathers from my polish. they get some feathers back then the bigger ones pluck them clean again?

Once chickens get into the habit of plucking, it's real hard to break them of it. In addition to what the above poster said, make sure your chickens have plenty of things to do to amuse themselves. Give them places to climb and hide and forage, hide treats around their run, and give them chicken-appropriate toys to keep them busy. Bored chickens tend to pluck more than entertained chickens. You might also consider giving your Polish a trim if their crests are obscuring their vision so that they can see big mean chickens coming their way.

I really shouldn't because I rent an apartment (really one half of a renovated barn with a large yard) but I REALLY wanted one and i'm hoping he isn't loud. that's the only issue I have. He seems friendly.

My Elvis looks almost exactly like your new boy.

I hate to disappoint, but Elvis ain't a quiet boy. He crows up a storm. Your little lad may be different, though, so hang on to hope.
