I have to talk POLISH!

LOVE HER!!!!! She's Beautiful just the way she is!!!! I really want another white polish...I miss the one I had!!!
Thank you! She's pretty, but terribly stupid. She runs into walls, falls in the pool, and can never find the flock... Sometimes I trim her crest to help her see, but that doesn't give her an intelligence boost.

I have a second generation hatchery cockerel I bought from a swap, luckily he's a decent quality bird

Yes, sometimes, you'll get really high quality birds from hatcheries. I know someone who got a Blue Andalusian from a feed store, and it ended up winning Champion Meditterainean and Best LF of Show. But 9 times out of 10 you end up with low quality birds.

I love my Polish! They are so cute and curious! They keep me smiling

Believe it or not I bought eggs from a breeder on Ebay and ended up with some decent birds. Real nice temperaments too. I also bought eggs from the BYC member revolutionmama and hatched out two beautiful pullets, one WC Blue with Cuckoo markings and one WC chocolate Cuckoo. I hope to buy some hatching eggs this spring from Tricia to get a WC Chocolate rooster to breed them to.

Here are my three adult Polish hens~

Yeah, I have no aspirations to try to show my chickens in competitions, so hatchery stock suits me just fine. My babies are beautiful to me, and that's what matters.:3

Very true. My hatchery quality layers were my first chickens: A SLW, a Delaware, and a production RIR. I just loved watching them roam around the yard, and develop unique personalities. However, my motto is it costs just as much to raise SQ Heritage Birds, so why not raise them? You may think "we'll they don't lay as much as hatchery quality birds." Or "they don't produce as much meat." Which is true in some cases, but of you research the SQ birds vs. hatchery quality birds then you'll have your answer and opinion. Just food for thought.

I would feel bad having standard quality birds if I had no intention to show them or breed them to standard... same reason I haven't yet invested in some Black Copper Marans. I feel like if I have something that valuable, I should be doing my part to keep the line going and not just keeping them around so I can have them. We're also not the most secure set up at the moment and I'd feel even extra awful--moreso than I already would--if a SQ or rare bird was killed by a wandering stray dog or oppossum. :\

That being said, there may come a time when I can set up a situation where I can breed quality birds and keep them in more secure runs, at which point, hey, why not? For now though I am content with my quirky, goofy little girls (and boy). lol

We just show ours at the local fair witch is small and for fun because the kidos are showing their goats and pigs any way we don't expect much; if we win something we're like cool beans if not not problem; the kids like getting ribbons they don't care what color they are lol. Our two frist chickens a Cochin cock and bbr oebg hen from the feed store won grand champion bantam a couple of years ago and the kidos got trophies they were really pleased about that.
