I have to talk POLISH!

I'm planning on getting an incubator soon...I would order from a hatchery but after my experience with my little Bennet I probably won't. She was from a hatchery, mated with a partridge, her two chicks hatched with deformities, one with crossed beak and the other with an extra toe. Then one day she began to loose all her head feathers...that was followed with attacks kind of epileptic attacks. I had to put her down. I miss her!

I have gotten 10 beautiful chicks from hatcheries in the past few months. I had hatched 3 Polish in 2 hatches, and both times needed "buddies" in a hurry. I'm very happy with them.

My polish girl is a Hatchery chick even thought she is small i'm very happy with her she is beautiful and she has a great personalty.

Hey, half my hens are hatchery birds and I still love them. I'll admit, I filtered out my small, skittish, or poorly colored ones

But I LOVE my remaining girls. Super personalities, super foragers, and still laying great at 3 years. I can't, though, go visit them without having a WCB hen on my shoulder. Or knee. Or arm.

A couple days ago I decided to completely "butcher" ( trim back ) my Silver Laced hen's crest though. I've yet to hatch anything from her and I really, really need offspring from her so with all the free ranging and watchful hawks going on lately, mixed with serious rain/windstorms causing her very full crest to droop depressingly, I clipped it all back but the back part so she can fully see now. By summer she won't need this trim, she sees pretty well despite how full her crest is, but in the winter she desperately needs the trim if I'm going to keep her pastured.

She's making her back appear hunched here though. For a hatchery girl she's got great weight, pretty darn good lacing, and a rarely found very well spanned tail that's just at 45 degrees.

Breast lacing.

It's a shocker to me considering everything else I got from them was horrible on many levels, not all concerning aesthetics, but - Murray McMurray.

Most of my WCB hens came from them, half are really really nice, and my Silver Laced girl is from them, although I ordered more than just one but the rest died.

the one hatchery I have had nice birds from is Ideal, I have gotten some great Brahmas and Polish from them. I tell folks they are "just hatchery stock" they are surprised. I was quite pleased with the results of my rash buy of a bunch of chicks. lol

Curious though, what folks are surprised? Most folks don't know the difference or care for the difference. At least, all the folks I run into.

BYC'ers when I have taken pictures of them. also other folks who I know who breed polish to standard. I only have 2 hatchery polish now though, the other 2 I kept were killed last year.

My brahmas are good birds though, they are good and stocky, nice penciling and have good brahma heads on them which most hatchery birds don't.
