First off, what an adorable little girl!

Second, I have mine hanging in the run, they free feed, and I throw scratch on the ground. They free range all day, dawn to dusk...I love not having to refill the feeder...and I don't have any waste now that it is hanging.

chickens should have 24/7 access to food, PLEASE do not give your chickens 'meals' a chickens stomach is so small that it can only hold enough food to last it for about 15 minutes so it has to eat that often. if it does not have access to food that often it will starve until you feed it again. I apologize for my bluntness but I've seen chickens who are very unhappy do to limited access to food.

When I checked on them mid day they still had food. That's fine right? I fill it pretty full each time and they always seem to have a bit left when I go back to fill it again.

Cute picture. We let the chickens eat as much as they want. We don't overfill the feeder because chickens like their feed fresh. We check it four times a day, though, to make sure they don't run out. They also have a yard, so have access to vegetation and bugs. At four p.m. they get a treat. I hadn't realized it, but one of the trees in their yard is a cherry. The branches are too high for them to fly up to, but they get the cherries that drop to the ground.

The amount I have seem thrown around as a suggested starting point is 4oz per chicken per day.

You could monitor how much you are giving them, if they have access to food at all times (except at night, if your coop is not totally secure, & you don't want to feed rodents) - over a few days you could see how much they are eating.

Re-read Freds answer - it's good information/suggestion.
