I have very odd looking Barred Rocks....or do I? Guess who game.

Definitely a Silver Laced but she sure fooled me at first having blended in so well amongst the Barred ladies! The flock we had 10 years ago had 2 Silver Laced and 2 Plymouth Barred Rocks. We enjoyed both but it's pretty hard to beat the easy going nature of the Barred Rocks. At least ours were pretty exceptional during our time with them.

Now that I have all the ladies in their permanent coop home, the GLW's are taking on some pretty cool personality traits.

We haven't named any of the Littles but I had an epiphany yesterday while working on the coop and absorbing the fact I unexpectedly now have GLW's. Maybe not terribly original but easy to remember;

Goldy
Lacey
Dotty

Now we need to come up with 3 good names for the Speckled Sussex ladies!

I've got a legbar rooster,2 Dominiques,a Barred Rock, a Wyandotte,2 Welsummers, 3 Leghorns, 2 Australorps and a hybrid Sapphire Gem that just hatched chicks. All of them contribute something to the flock even the rooster. My rooster walked over to the broody hen after I 'introduced' them by opening the door.He walked in and started calling for the chicks to give them tidbits (but none of them went over there lol) He made a nest for the broody hen to lay in with pine shavings

Depending on the first one you spot you'll assume they're all the same breed but they're 3 different breeds lol

That’s how I named the birds.

Buffy the Buff Plymouth Rock
Dottie the Blue Laced Wyandotte
Blackie the Black Star
Brownie the Black Star (her feathers are brown)
Blondie the Ideal 236 (yellow as chicks, but white now)
Queenie the Ideal 236, because she thought she was queen of the roost (or coop). From chickhood she’s perched on whatever the highest point she could get to.

Since I retired from teaching in a high school vet science program, I no longer hatch eggs, but neither do I buy chicks from a local store that is likely to mix them up. Instead, I order already sexed chicks from one of several hatcheries or private farms. Never have gotten the wrong breed, and although they guarantee 90% accuracy on sexing, it is rare that I get an accidental rooster. Also have not lost a chick in shipping, although I know that could happen.

Because of this, my flock of ~36 hens is made up of many different varieties. Have Lavender and Chocolate Orpingtons, Appenzeller Spitzheimers, Australorps, Marans, Anconas, Dominiques, Wellsummers, Faveroles, and different blue feathered varieties as well as other more common varieties. Great way to have an interesting flock. You can also get them vaccinated against Mareks for $.50 each. Just cross check chick prices as a few hatcheries cater to doting pet lovers likely to pay way too much.
