I tend to "idolize" certain people who are good at what they do and though it's probably not a smart thing to do, I kind of follow their word like it's THE word unless something important changes my mind.
When I first got into this, I depended heavily on a friend of mine in upstate NY who is sort of an animal "guru" as she is a big regional 4H person and she lectures at different colleges and extension services in the North Country on a variety of topics. THEN, when I got my first geese from Dennis Fuller at Wapsi Waterfowl, I found him to be excellent at dispensing complete, well researched, accurate and articulate information. Plus, it was usually very close to the information I got from my upstate friend.
So, I know that there are different camps who do different things and there are even cliques out there, but in the regard of getting information on my ducks and geese, I'm pretty happy with keeping company with my two main "mentors"...even though I could NEVER be as precise and detailed as Dennis!!
But, with that said, and I mean this sincerely, people have to do what works for them and if their results are good, even if they do EVERYTHING opposite from "the book", that's their business! I just had some local chicken person try to take over my life and criticize everything I did to the point of being a psycho and it really showed me the person that I do NOT want to be!!! It drove home the point that there really are more ways to do the same thing correctly.
Enough on the rambling soapbox for this hour. LOL.
