In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes and no. Contemplated getting some a few years back so I did the research then. Finally decided it was time to have chickens about 6 weeks ago. So I have approximately 5 week old chickens.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have five. And that's all I'm getting. Honest. I swear. But I do like that they keep the bugs down..and eggs are tasty...and chickens are tasty. But I'm sticking with five.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Amberlinks for now. Once it's time to *ahem* retire some of these ladies I intend to add in a couple Wyandotte's. Long term I think I'll go with heritage breeds almost exclusively. Depending on how this chicken experiment goes there may also be some broilers in the future..and chicken math.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Nothing right now. They aren't fuzzy-butts anymore but instead are just homely looking poop-machines who eat a lot. Typical teenagers.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
If it's outdoors, I probably like it.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Just trying to raise the kids and grandkids to be self-sufficient rational thinkers who appreciate where their food comes from and all the work that goes into acquiring it. Whether that's hunting, foraging, or earning the money to purchase it.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Internet search, known for a couple of years, and it seems to be a great resource of collective knowledge.
