You don't have to NPIP to ship, just have to have the birds that you want to ship tested.

Sorry Bam that you lost you're birds

He's okay tonight. He came home from school and sat down by me and said he was gonna find a way to earn some money so he could buy Mom new chickens, and then his little chin started shaking and his eyes teared up. I told him about the kind people on BYC that have offered to help us with hatching eggs and also have given me a chance to draw for them so that we could make some money. I hugged him and told him it would be okay. I told him he can help me with any chicks that we get and that if I can earn enough money that we'd order some new chicks in the spring and that he can pick some for himself.

When I was married to my ex and he worked out of town for weeks on end, it was this same little boy of mine that "manned up" and helped his Mom as well as any man ever could've on our small farm. My little man has always taken a lot of responsibility on himself, by his own choice, so when this happened last night he felt like he let his Mom down but he also let himself down. This must have bothered him quite a bit today for him to make a plan to make money to buy Mom new chickens. He is such a sweet little boy, and I love him with all my heart. I'm blessed to have him in my life and I'm grateful I had this chance to be his Mom. We adopted this little man from foster care along with his brother and another little girl a year before. I'm a very blessed Momma!

Interesting veiw. When my son comes in the house from being out at the coop and I specifically ask him if he shut the door and he lies and says yes, I would say yes. I guess it could be the adults fault that I can't follow all 8 of our children around all day checking up on their answers when we ask if they've done what they've been asked or taught to do. I didn't think of it like that. I'll rethink my parenting issues and see if I could maybe make them responsible for their actions and honesty issues at an older age. I feel terrible now. Maybe I could go hug him and tell him it was my fault instead and see how much I can confuse him.

Of course my son wasn't scolded. He feels terrible about it. How would scolding have helped? He was never told it was his fault, there's no need for that.

You must have me confused for a Mother who doesn't care about her children, and that is very sad. That couldn't be further from the truth.

Ok I didnt read the whole thread but how else do you teach a child responsibility. That must be why there are so many irresponsible people in the world. They were never left to have to do anything on their own without someone checking their work and making sure it was done right. My son is 6 and he has plenty of responsibility and chores. If it wasn't done right the first time he gets scolded and made to do it by himself. Your son got a very hard lesson of the real world and he got plenty of punishment on his own. Makes for a lot better person when he learns things on his own. I'm sure any parent knows that kids do not learn things that are just told to them. It takes doing it on their own to actually learn and have it sink in.
Sorry for your loss and I really do hope that things get better for you

I would put a spring on that coop door so that it would be self closing. I can't tell you how many times I woke up in the middle of the night thinking "Did I or didn't I close that door?"

Predators seem to understand pushing the door in, but very few of them catch on to pulling it open. Make to door open out.

Good ideas Rufus! Our coop is inside a shed. The shed door is a house door with a door knob that does open out (if someone shuts it). The door to the coop inside the shed also opens out. The shed door was left open giving access to the dogs and the dogs didn't bother using the coop door, they ripped through the wire. I have had these chickens for a year and a half in this same coop set up with no issues as long as the door was simply shut.

We have a bungee cord attached from the inside of the coop door to the side wall. Works great for keeping closed...but, I have to make sure they aren't sticking their little heads out (as they do everytime it's opened) searching for bugs. Would be real easy to shut their heads in the door.

I have left mine opened a couple of times and it has saved me because it has just enough tension to keep it closed and too hard to pull open.

Hope things are getting better for you!

Bammony, what kind of chickens did you have, I have just hatched out 25 or so Black Australorp, you can see them on my website, if you want some I have a box and will order a heat pack, and ship you some my friend. God is good to us, we just sometimes don't see the brighter side of the worse sitiuations at the time. I tell God everyday, thank you lord, thank you, I never say or have on my mind any particular thing, but just because I can take a breath and walk on this earth, is a thank you to me. All my info is on my website, if you want some of these chicks, all you have to do is email me your complete name and shipping address, and when I get the heat pack in I will let you know their on there way, god bless, and good luck

I am so sorry for you and your son's loss. I am sure he won't forget to shut the door again. I am sure you will get some chicks soon and it is wonderful people are willing to help you replace your stock. I would too if I had baby chicks.

On your drawing what talent very beautiful. I wish I had half that talent. I was wondering can you draw other animals/classic cars? I am sure you can with that talent but are you willing too?

eta: fix typo
