Good luck with that. Don't be surprised if you find the temps swing from pretty low to pretty high. The hot water heater thermostats tend to not hold the temps as steady. But I've had tons of hatches with my old Miss Prissy bator...so they do work. Just sayin' that it can be frustrating to get the temp steady.

Try getting a "water wiggler" from the dollar store and put a probe type thermometer inside. It mimicks the inside of the egg and you'll find the temps remain pretty steady there. I got my thermometer for that in the kitchen section at walmart....Here is a pic of it and a pic of the water wiggler....works great!!

If the cords melted / any carbonizing, toss and replace it to be safe because carbon is conductive.

To get those temp swings down to a minimum, make sure the stat is attached to something metal and within about 2-3 inches of the heat source.

To accomplish this, I used the metal housing from the comp fan and took off everything that wasnt needed, just left the fan and most of the metal housing.
If you use that and position it good, the housing will give you the optimal stat-attachment point and keep the new chicks away from the fan after they hatch.
