... a 30 lb. metal feeder in the coop. The girls seemed unable to find the food even though it is about eye level to them. They turned six weeks yesterday. Should I continue to feed them on the ground for awhile? They are fouling a lot of feed by scratching into it.

I would give it some time. Maybe show one of them where it is, or hang it slightly lower. I think the recommended height is at the level of their backs.

S/he's right-eye level is a little high.

Thanks to all. My girls are still "trying their wings," so even at eye level it seems like a lot of pine shavings get into the feed.

Subhanalah, what age would you start them on fermented feed? These girls are just over 6 weeks at present.

I start them from day one now. It definitely has made a big difference in their condition!
It's easy if you have a little bit of patience! You can even start feeding them the moistened feed before it is fully fermented, and it will increase nutrient absorption.

I lowered the height of the feeder by two chain links and that did the trick. Thanks for the help.
