We use river sand, have cheap (free) access to all of it we want to dig and haul close to the house. The girls love it.

When we get river sand to put in the garden to improve the clay drainage, it is always full of weed seeds, which is a drag for the garden but might be great if you are a chicken!

I had 2 dump truck loads of just plain old sand delivered for my coops and I love it. It is not so fine that it gets all over. It is heavy enough that it stays in each run.
