i know im perinoid, but what happened when you did it

We ordered from Ideal Poultry. The Post Office called us as soon as they came in... AT 5 AM IN THE MORNING! Luckely for us we live downtown and the main PO is just like a mile away. Of course we couldnt go back to sleep and picked them up right away. I'm glad that we have a good PO where they didnt sit for a long time.

I did talk to my post man before they got there to find out wether he would bring them or wether I would have to pick them up. He said that all PO were different. Some dont let them carry poutry in the mail trucks. He was looking out for them but the guy down at the office called first.

Good luck they will be fine.

i live in that tiny almost make belive town of Kirkwood PA i am not even sure if we HAVE a main post officebut i am concerned because like most p.o. mine is closed on sunday :O i don't want them to stay there pver night, what do you suppose will happen?

I called my local post office two days ago to ask how they handle live chick shipments and what I would need to do. They said they don't open until 8 a.m., but will likely call me closer to 6:30 a.m. the day the chicks arrive. They said they would open early so that I would not have to wait until 8:00 a.m. to pick them up.

Saltiena- why don't you just call the P.O. and ask?

The main hub for your town is most likely a larger regional office that sorts the mail for several local post offices.

I live is a small rural community, the population is 800 people. The local post office is 1 mile away. The main hub is 20 miles away from me.

Call your local post office and tell them you're getting live chicks and you need to know where the main hub is located and the phone number. Then let the main hub personnel know your concerns.

I don't know about McMurray but Ideal Poultry only ships on certain days of the week, I think Mon-Wed. It takes usually 2 days for the chicks to get to you so if they ship on Monday you'll be able to pick them up in Wednesday. Let your post office know if you're expecting chicks and pick them up as soon as they call!!!

I don't have my chicks yet but my p.o. said they will call me at 5:30 am!!!! They told me to pick them up ASAP because they don't want to listen to peeps all day, and it's not good for the babies.

I am ordering for mcmurray soon, and I was wondering the same.
Anyway, if I were to order them today, could i get them monday, or how long does it take?

I think the post office people are great to work with. An oder of chicks from McMurray arrived at the main hub in White River Juntion Vermont, which is about 1.5 hrs from me. They called to tell me that the chicks wouldn't be at the local post office until the next morning and the chicks appeared to be cold. They told me that if I wanted to that I could drive up to the White River sorting facility, go around to the dock and knock on the door, tell them who I was and they'd hand the chicks to me. It all worked out perfectly. i thought they went way beyond what is expected of them. The local post office is great too. They always call as soon as my shipment of chicks arrive.

I often read of how poor our postal system is but I have found them to be the best government agency to deal with not only with chickens but with all matters. The chances are good that if you're dealing with the post office that things will work out to the advantage of you and your chicks.
