This chick hatched on May 26th. Behavior has had me thinking cockerel since day one. The picture of him standing is a bit blurry. His parents are Welsummer rooster and SLW hen.

Just curious what you think. I will of course post more pictures at a later date.

It's definitely too early to say for certain. Females can be just as spunky and feisty as males, so don't go drawing any conclusions yet. Keep us updated and enjoy that cutie!

Look at that comb! I vote cockerel. I have some chicks that I can tell are cockerels at about 2 weeks.

Plus the pink tinge even at rest is another clue.

The other from that cross are single comb, like the rooster. So, I really can't make a comparison that way.

Single combs will thicken in cockerels at a young age before the comb gets big.

Still slightly too early to know for sure, as you already understand. Yes, the comb is a little pink, but we can't safely make any assumptions quite yet.

I am just wanting to track this one early. The rooster is a Welsummer and if this one were purebred I would fairly certain in gender just based on patterning within 24 hours of hatching.
