I agree with others: You need to do something & keep your birds home. If they wipe out one perennial, it'll cost her $6-$8 to replace it.

My run is big, cuz I have ALOT of chickens. It was cheap. We used 4' chainlink from a friend's garbage pile, topped with chicken wire. Our 7ft. "posts" are landscape timbers ($4 each).
 
Yes, penning them can be fine--just make sure they have enough room in their pens. When you can be out with them, you can let them free range in your yard. Better penned birds than dead ones.
