I know my rescue girls have Bumblefoot, do they also have leg mites?

Breeds: 2 buff Brahmin, 1 Rhode Island Red

Age: I have no idea

Someone dumped three hens in our neighborhood and they have become mine. I built them their own coop and am having a fantastic time. (I’d been wanting chickens, so I guess the universe decided to provide)

Unfortunately they clearly weren’t in the best conditions. We’re currently treating for six cases of Bumblefoot (not fun).

(These photos are actually about five days old and their feet are already less swollen/inflamed. Hooray!

Unfortunately I can’t post more recent photos because I didn’t think to take any before I rewrapped their feet this morning. They get regular Epsom salt baths and triple antibiotics. I previously removed the plugs.

I can’t decide if they have leg mites or if the scales are just raised due to the trauma from the bumble feet (and whatever they were living in that caused the bumblefeet). Today during their baths I was able to fit the tip of my tweezers under a few of one of the Brahmin’s scales and pulled out clumps of dirt.

Oh and as a treat here is our most, ah, spirited girl getting her pedicure.

(Yes she’s missing some feathers in the front. They were filthy and she seems to have plucked them to get the briars off of her. Her skin is clear and there’s no sign of mites there)

Looks like some of those legs do have scaly leg mites. Treatment is easy. Some sort of thick oil or ointment will suffocate them. Pretty non-invasive, so even if there are no mites, no harm/no foul and the oil can be soothing.
