I know peat moss is the ethical evil of evils...

Not true. That's a myth perpetuated by the media and environmental groups. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for not using so many chemicals, pesticides, etc., but DDT had little if anything to do with bald eagles being threatened.

On the peat moss subject, check here...

It's in the harvesters best interest to make sure their product is sustainable, so far it sounds like they are striving to make sure that it is. They also mention identifying and setting aside bogs for conservation so they will never be harvested. I would consider peat from members of the CSPMA to be a pretty responsible product, overall.

After doing a quick search it looks like Mexico persisted in using DDT to control Malaria, but it appears they are attempting to phase it out and look for a better alternative.
I hope so, I didn't know anyone still used DDT today, I thought it was banned!

Nice, thanks for the links and info sproutgirl!

That's What we're going for. We have been doing some good trades with my folks. They have lots of "browns", a chipper/ shredder, and a huge rotating drum composter. We give them "green" chicken poo to balance their browns and get some good finished compost from them.

Right now my garden is just potatoes, carrots, and red onions because my sandy soil won't grow anything else. I'm excited about using my chicken poo peat moss and compost soil on my next crop to grow more veggies!

I'm going to try a fall and winter crop too.

We have a small garden, but it's our cucmbers that are thriving. Over 22 from just 3 plants.

I bought peat moss a few weeks ago to put in my run. I haven't tried it yet, but I figured it would dry up the run pretty good after the spring rains stop, and keep the odour down. I buy it every year for my gardens. Cheap is right, never thought of using it in the coop though. I think I might add some in with the shavings and see what happens

Has anyone tried coir in their coop....did you like it? how did it perform?

Would this be considered stealing a thread? I don't to upset anyone, just curious
