I know silkies are hard to sex, but can you try this one?

She is not laying, and the people I got her from said that she was almost in adulthood so that sounds about right.

Unfortunatly I don't think the blind roo - Roosty - is going to get any "happiness" from her. He doesn't even know which ways up and holds his head down and kinda upside down until he hears a noise. He has a handicapped duck buddy that chirps so he holds his head up and helps him get around. We thought we might need to put him down, but he can eat and drink just fine and getting around is no problem thanks to his buddy.

He was half blind for a long time and then the other day I went out to let everybody out of the pen and he was totally blind.

Well if she isn't laying, she could possibly be years and years old and the reason they were selling her is because she WASNT laying.... either way, I think by the pictures that she is definitely an adult bird. 1" nails isn't something that an 8 month old bird would have.

She was the same age as some EE's they had there, I just don't remember what they told me. I talked to alot of people. I KNOW that she is not old enough to be out of her laying days.

It doesn't matter if she lays or not to me though, she was to be a buddy for the handicapped duck and chicken.

I dont mean to contradict you, but i have a five month pullet thats needed her nails clipped twice already-it all depends on genetics and breeding.

Im so sorry about the roo, i just lost a white silkie roo to coyotes last month

. thanks to that silly robitussion commercial (youll sleep like you did b4 the roo went blind) i kinda figured a blind chicken could get around alright

i've had alot of rescues-wings missing, homade wheelchairs, deformed beaks( i get them from a "breeder" ive been working with....i dont think she quite understands what she does to those poor birds....) either way ive never had one with such a handycap, i wish there was somthing i could recommend to help him

You may contradict me as you see fit, however you also thought that bird to be "breeder quality." And if I may contradict you, "Breeder Quality" would suggest that any bird being labeled as such, would have traits or characteristics that would be desired in offspring, and could possibly be improved with strategic breeding. Perhaps your confusing "breeder quality" with "Pet Quality."

Furthermore, my young birds are kept on shavings from birth, through adulthood. I've got 6 month olds in the coop now whom I haven't had to cut nails yet. Perhaps your bird is older than you think also.

Someone asked, I answered. I don't believe my opinion to be the final word, however judging by the picture, and my experience, I'd say i'm pretty right on....

I have to agree with Chris, definately a hen, and I'm sure she's over a year old. She's certainly not a pullet. Either she's not laying because she hasn't settled in yet or she's already past the point of lay.

I have 4 and 6 month old pullets and roos. None have had to have their toenails clipped there not even long. Deff and Hen but ALOT older then anything from 4 to 6 months she looks alot older then mine.

Here is my 6 month old grey pullet Peppa. Sorry she is in the middle of a squat.
