I just had a chick hatch and it has a huge swollen butt, its also got a membrane thing attached to the egg shell, she is vigorously trying to get it off but it can't. What is it and what do I do? *sigh, why do we get so attached to things we barely even met??

If it's not bright yellow like a yolk, it's probably the waste from the egg and you can just swipe it off. It'll probably look like it's attached at her belly because it used to be attached. Sometimes I have to clip this off them if it's attached by strings *shrug* No big deal

Ok...phew I can handle that. What about the swollen butt?

I tried to take a pic and she fell back into the shell so now the shell looks like its attached to the butt! If she moves it or I clip it off, I'll take a pic. I remember someone said something like that about the big butt, but I can't remember. Its weird to think the yolk could make her butt big...its a good thing we don't have yolks...I don't need my butt any bigger.

It's more than likely the yolk in her belly/lower abdomen and is perfectly normal for her to look swollen in the butt area due to this. Once they fluff out it's less noticeable

Grats on the chick!

Thank you! I feel better, he ripped himself out of the egg by himself, it looks like some sort big veiny thing was holding them together. But he appears to big butted but fine!
