We have a family of barred owls. Every year they nest in a huge dead tree that we have in our yard, which is why we leave the tree there. I heard the female inside the tree today, so she's laying. I love watching the babies grow. They have never been afraid of us, and even bathe in our bird bath. We have never had a problem with the owls taking our chickens, and our chickens don't even worry when the owls are around. These are last year's babies. They are so cute!

Ours never leave. They are everywhere. I can't believe they don't bother your chickens. If my birds free ranged, they would wipe them all out.
Owls are neat to look at but they are a nuisance here.

Bless you for leaving their house intact! As long as there's little risk of the tree falling on your house in a storm, leaving dead trees alone is really important to wildlife (as you already understand). I wish we had a family of owls around - they sure help with the rodents, and are so beautiful!

We also had a tree where pilated (sp?) woodpeckers nested, so we left it up, too, but it fell this year. We live in central Florida. As far as this tree falling in a storm - it's enormous! I would be more worried about the house falling down than the tree. If it does, it is leaning away from the house, so hopefully we will be safe.
