My flock consists of lots of lots brown egg layers... Red Sex links, RIR, Australorp, Barred Rock, Jersey Giant... and more.... BUT the best egg layer by 50% is the plain old leghorn Ideal's 236 commercial chicken.

Nothing to look at really.... in fact quite "plain" or even "ugly" but the best egg layer ever. I know people that I sell hens to swear by the sex links... but I stand by the Leghorn 236. These are the BEST layers of all!!!! (pity that know one knows this......)

Lets hear it for Leghorns/236....

Hey there, I just wanted to add my two cents in on this one.
I was given 7 chickens (this is how I got started) 6 of them are white leghorns that were bought at TSC as peeps, they are 2+ years old, I have had them since June. I have changed their feed from TSC to Blue Seal layer, gave them free choice of oyster shell, they have grit, a large run, I give them ACV in their water, yogurt once a week. Now you know what I do this is what I get 1 or 2 eggs a day,the shells are so thin that my fingers make dents in the shell when I pick them up, when I clean the poop out of the pine shavings I find 1 or 2 rubber eggs in the litter that they pass while on the roost or thin shelled ones that bust! I want to send them to another farm but Domestic other will not let me. Not happy with these leghorns sorry.

Hi... Look again... I said the "Ideal 236 leghorn". Its a "special commercial bred" chicken and a little different. Part production black and lots of leghorn. Try THESE type and you will be happy. Maybe your chickens are having some other problem? good luck eitherway

If you want a really nice brown egg layer...

Try the Rocks.

The white, the partridge and the barred are excellent layers.
They are quiet, docile and the roos are attentive and HUGE.

I personally like the whites and the partridge.

Yes, the do eat more than a leghorn, but the hawks tend to stay away from them because of thier size.

You might try game bird feed and mix a scoop of oyster shell right in the feed every time you feed. This is what I do and I have been told by those I give eggs to that my eggs are actually hard to crack!

I'm new at this also and the research that I've done say's the Isa Browns are the best egg layers. Mine started laying around 17 weeks and I have only gotten 1 thin egg. This is just my opinion. I'm sure some of the experts here will know for sure.

I don't know about the white leghorns, but I got a couple of red sexlinks in May - and each of them have only taken one day off since we got them. Not sure it can get any better than that.

Don't think I need to look/read again....I said my two cents worth to your "Ideal 236 Leghorn"
I have other breeds of hens, SLW,BLRW,GLW,RIR,RSL and some EE'S all eat the same feed, and only the WHITE LEGHORNS have problems.....as said before my two cents! did not know how special your Ideal 236's are to you, I only joined in to BYC so I could learn more about raising chickens....I did not know how nasty some people can get over a forum...Have a great day....
Thanks for the tip Rusty Hills Farm will try it....

I have 2 red sex links --Golden Comets-- and I get 2 perfect large brown eggs every morning without fail. Here's proof from the last few days!
