i know this has been beaten to death but black head questions

WOW!! Sorry again to hear about your loss. You took some great pics. Very educational to see. Good information.

So where do you go from here? Can you save the rest? Will they be ok?

Excellent shots (thank you for posting) will be of benefit to others in future.

Probably need to treat all to be absolutely sure. However, immediate worming of flock(s) with Albendazole might go a long way to reducing concentration (treat the turks with Metronidazole/chooks and turks with Valbazen/Albendazole).

Coops/runs should be cleared out (sand over soil if removal of top layer of soil/moving runs isn't an option). The dryer the better. Then institute regular worming schedule with the Valbazen.

my birds are split say 50/50 breeders/eaters, any idea how long it takes for withdrawal? We've been told to use Ivermectin drench... apparently a couple drops above the vent and shoulders does it and its supposed to be broad spectrum wormer/anti-parasitic aswell as helps with lice? going off of hearsay here. your publication does list it as cecal worm remover. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Sib

With the Ivermectin figure withdrawl at 14 days. However, if not wearing gloves when squirting it on birds (.5cc smaller breeds/1cc larger -cattle pour-on - upper back between wings) you'll get a larger dose transdermally (moves easily through skin) in one application, than you would by eating all eggs/meat on the third day following application): info on ivermectin: http://www.inchem.org/documents/pims/pharm/ivermect.htm

Valbazen
is usually recommended as it kills All offenders (best shotgun for internal offenders), withdrawl somewhat longer (but these withdrawl times are those for sheep/cattle going for slaughter - not poultry).

Eprinex (Eprinomectin) will get almost all external parasites, most `worms', and has zero withdrawl. info: http://www.inchem.org/documents/jecfa/jecmono/v041je02.htm

I am so sorry about the poster's loss but, I would like to thank MissTurkey for her insight. I was not fighting black head but rather some pecked on poults that were not getting enough to eat. Thank you

metronidazole is a god send! They've only been on it for about 2 days now, and already i see results. they have stopped getting worse, and they are eating more. they are not so hunched (not quite normal but not so miserable looking). I will definitely keep some on hand for any future complications! And on to a regiment of adding cyanne pepper as a preventative. I've also been told cider vinegar... I'm all about prevention. how often should i worm?
Thanks
Sib

Syble -- I'm so glad to hear your others are recovering.

I put vinegar in the water at times for all of them. It can't hurt. Generally, I put 2 to 4 tablespoons in a gallon, and I use raw organic vinegar so it has live microbes in it. I don't do it all the time, maybe once every other week. I don't know if it really does anything, but as I said, it can't hurt.

I haven't tried feeding them cayenne yet per se. Last year, at the end of the season when I was doing garden cleanup, I threw some old pepper plants with some hot peppers still attached in to my chickens and turkeys, and they cleaned up everything but the woody stems. But they were mild types of hot peppers, anchos and anaheims, not the really hot stuff.

every ones looking great now, the toms have started strutting again (i have 5 or 6 toms out of 9 and i was down to 1-2 left strutting). Was a great sight to open the barn this morning and have them run up to the door and puff up! #81 looked miserable a couple days back and he was strutting with the rest. Even my dads commenting on the returned color and vigor!

Rewards for having to catch and medicate turkeys twice a day haha.
Thanks
Sib
